I believe most people concur that this action could not have pre-planned for any length of time. It appears to come as an almost desperate measure leading to speculation about the financial position of Linden Lab.

With the departure of many of the NPC’s goes the loss of jobs for Second Life residents as well. The loss of rich content and productive residents.

A great deal of interest is being show in the direction of Inworlz grid. This latest blow from Linden Lab is creating an the environment of a mass exodus.

In some cases we budgetted our SL region maintenance grant 3threeyears in advance as it was research project based, not annual teachign based. Allowance for inflation is of course normal, but 100% increases in fees is just not on.

Finally! We can get rid of all these freeloading universities/NP’s and make more room for Giant Penises.

Great Job Linden Labs!

Emotionally, I am a bit upset that Linden is not increasing its involvement with NPCs and EDUs, maybe even setting up a specialized GRID for handling class loads and helping multiplex and logically arrange schedules. A bit of creative on demand rezzing, could overlap many campuses onto a single sim… HoloDeck style and at different altitudes. But I am too cynical to expect much from Linden anymore. Instead, I’d like to point out, as these clients leave SL, it will create finally a practical reason for OpenSIMS, which before now were just for experimentation and entertainment. This should cause consultants and servers to finally eye the market of these 3D metaworlds, as potentially profitable? When the OpenSIMS soon become easy turnkey operations, commercial users who have behind the scenes wanted to set up 3D SL-like strip malls and stores, will also come to try it out, just like 5 years ago the NPCs and EDUs started to try SL for their venues. Imagine Apple discovering an entire market for smart phones and then instead of serving it, abandoning it to Nokia or Samsung… they did!, they gave the Newton market to PALM!, but this time, they were smarter. Next time Linden has the kind of control they do and some major opportunity sits in front of them to support it, maybe they will have learned from this abandonment too? Meanwhile… the door has just been thrown open to a new and energetic revival of metaversal applications!… Linden complacency, will no longer inhibit ideas and opportunities. WOW kicked us in the pants for game environments, this is where OpenSIM enterprises will finally catch up and exceed that!

The Linden actions that severely damaged the not-for-profit and educational presence in SL can only be thought as desperate measurs. Nonetheless, despite the horrid downstream immediate replanning and soon to be seen closures, I think the community has strong cooperative ties to survive elsewhere. There are other grids building up that may serve better than Second Life. I wish the best for you all.
